What is Cryo Therapy?

Cryotherapy, which means “cold therapy,” is a therapy used to where the body is exposed to very cold temperatures over a period of a few minutes.

Cryotherapy can be be focused specifically to one area, or you can experience cryotherapy for the entire body. Since there are many variations of cryotherapy, your healthcare provider can help you decide what therapy would be best. It can be localized through ice packs, ice massage, coolant sprays, ice baths, and even through probes administered into tissue. Full body cryotherapy can provide many additional benefits mentioned to the right of this page.

The theory for complete body cryotherapy is that by immersing the body in very cold air for several minutes, a rejuvenation process of the body begins to occur. The person will be inside an enclosed chamber or a small enclosure that surrounds their body but has an opening for their head at the top. The chamber will drop to between negative 200–300°F. They’ll stay in the ultra-low temperature air for between two and four minutes.

Cryotherapy is most effective when used regularly. Some athletes use cryotherapy twice a day. Others will go daily for 10 days and then once a month afterwards.

Cryo therapy is a safe procedure that patients can experience that may provide a variety of healing benefits.
